Ceilidh music is provided by any assortment of fiddle, flute, tin whistle, accordion, bodhran (a drum like instrument - traditionally with a wooden frame covered with stretched goat hide) and in more recent times drums and electric bass guitar. The music is cheerful and lively and the basic steps can be learned easily; a short instructional session is often provided for new dancers by a caller before the start of the dance itself.
Over the past decade Ceilidh bands have become increasing popular for weddings and other private functions. They create a very natural and communal energy, one that cannot help but get people dancing. Before long all your guests will be sharing a dance and a laugh with people they would not normally meet in other entertainment formats. |
